BLOOD-BRAIN BARRIER Important for many reasons. - segarama - 17-12-2005 December 16, 2005 Hi, As we sit back and look at the inside and outside of the brain, it is obvious that it is really a complicated, but a wonderful creation. [not as in Creation vs. Evolution or is it?] If it were not for the BBB Blood-Brain Barrier, many many foreign invaders would go from our blood stream directly to the brain. First we really need to know about the anatomy of the BBB and the function before we begin solving the possible amelioration of disease and memory or learning...at least that seems logical. I retrieved a number of URLs regarding the BBB from the internet that are really quite interesting. 12-16-05. Well, let's take a look since we now have some knowlege of learning and memory and the anatomy along with the functions of many areas of the brain. I retrieved this particular URL and others from the internet on December 16, 2005. It seems that if or when we drink alcohol, the BBB does not preclude it from entering. I guess that is why it affects people so quickly sometimes. I am looking for a large list of neurtransmitters that are precluded from the brain by the BBB. Dopaminergic agonist neurotranstmitters are precluded from the [brain] ie., basal ganglia, striatum and substantia nigra that are affected by the loss of dying dopamine neurons in the substantia nigra...[Parkinson's Disease] ,but L'Dopa can make it through the BBB and be of great temporary relief for the symtoms of Parkinson's Disease. Once the wearing off affect of the L'Dopa begins there are other means to treat the symptoms of Parkinsons. There is no know cure as of this date for Parkinson's disease. This is the reason I keep referencing Parkinson's symptoms....this is true with other diseases where doctors are treating the symptoms...which is actually very helpful until a cure is found. I still believe there will be a cure for Parkinson's Disease by the end of this decade. Best, Rob Interesting URL retrieved from the internet 12-17-05. Let see what others are saying. Best, Rob Urls retrieved from the internet December 17, 2005. I have retrieved a URL from the internet that references the Central Nervous System and you can find the BBB material in the Index [right side of page]. It can pinpoint the active region with a millimeter, and can follow the movement of brain activity as it travels from region to region within the brain. MEG is noninvasive requiring only that the subject's head lie within a helmet containing the magnetic sensors. The BLOOD-BRAIN BARRIER is indeed a barrier.....who put it there?....how did it evolve? Why can somethings penetrate the BBB and others cannot...well there are answers to these questions...but I don't know the evolutionary theory that put it there in the first place.....do all mammals have a BBB? Do they work in the same manner? I would be very interested in what anyone has to say on this.
