Grade Twelve prepare for June Examinations
Posted by: Newsroom - 18-05-2010, 09:54 AM - Forum: South Africa - No Replies

"Today, most of the provinces high schools will begin their internal Grade twelve (12) June examinations. I would like to extend my best wishes to each and every Grade twelve (12) learner during this period," said Western Cape Education Minister Donald Grant on Monday.

"These examinations are very important as they provide learners with the opportunity to learn more about the standards required for their final National Senior Certificate Examinations, as well as, determine their academic performance for the year so far."

Grant said that learners who find that they are struggling in certain areas must not be discouraged.

"They can be assured that the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) is doing all it can to help them improve in all subject areas," he said.

"We encourage all learners to take part in our winter holiday programmes or after school tutorial sessions. Learners can also consult their "Tips for success" booklets for further studying advice and planning materials. We encourage all Grade twelve (12) learners to make use of every single day to work hard to ensure that they pass Grade twelve (12) at the end of year, as passing matric is a prerequisite in ensuring that Grade twelve (12) learners can be become full and productive citizens."

Grant said that the WCED was working closely with schools to monitor the impact of the rail strike, particularly its effect on the Grade twelve (12) examinations.

"We are working with schools on a case by case basis, monitoring attendance figures and disruptions to the examinations. Contingency plans will be put in place, if necessary, to ensure that Grade twelve (12) learners are able to write their examinations," he said.

"However, initial reports indicate that there have been no major disruptions to these examinations but we continue to urge parents to arrange alternative transport to ensure that learners are able to attend school. The provincial government has a plan in place to deal with the strike and is working closely with taxi operators and bus companies to provide extra transport, so hopefully the impact on learners will be minimal."

Rice and Blair - Changing Women's Education in Asia
Posted by: admin - 14-05-2010, 07:11 AM - Forum: Education News - No Replies

NEW YORK - The Asian University for Women (AUW) will host a fundraising event at Sotheby's art auction house this Thursday, May 13, 2010 to highlight the importance of women's education in the developing world. Dr. Condoleezza Rice, AUW Patron and former U.S. Secretary of State, and Mrs. Cherie Blair, AUW Patron and wife of Tony Blair, are the keynote speakers for the event. AUW is honoring Goldman Sachs and the 10,000 Women Initiative for its commitment to and support of the mission of AUW. AUW will also honor Kathy Matsui, Managing Director, Goldman Sachs Japan Co., Ltd, for her tireless efforts in helping launch AUW.

Located in Chittagong, Bangladesh, the Asian University for Women is based on the firm belief that higher education provides a critical pathway to leadership development, economic progress, and social and political equality. The University's mission is to prepare women of high ability and potential to meet society's challenges and effect positive change through an innovative and rigorous curriculum. AUW combines the liberal arts and sciences with graduate professional training to develop thoughtful and ethical leaders.

The University educates promising young women from diverse cultural, religious, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds from all across Asia and the Middle East, with a particular emphasis on the inclusion of women from impoverished, rural, and refugee populations. There are currently 300 students enrolled at AUW from 12 countries throughout Asia, including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Palestine, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam. The student body will expand to 450 students in the new academic year.

The Asian University for Women Support Foundation (AUWSF), incorporated as a non-profit organization based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, serves as the planning and fundraising organization for this effort.
